Southwest Airlines appoints Bob Jordan as chief executive officer

US carrier Southwest Airlines has announced the appointment of Bob Jordan as its new CEO.

He will take over from the company’s current CEO and chair Gary Kelly in February 2022, when Kelly will become the carrier’s executive chair.

Jordan is currently Southwest’s executive vice president corporate services. He joined the company in 1988 and has held a number of senior roles, including corporate controller and chief commercial officer. He previously worked for Hewlett-Packard as a programmer and financial analyst.

William Cunningham, Southwest’s lead director on the board, said in a statement: “The airline has a strong leadership team, and the board has always taken seriously its role to oversee a strong succession plan for the top leadership roles. Gary has been an outstanding CEO for Southwest for nearly two decades and has developed an excellent group of senior leaders to shepherd the airline into its next 50 years.

“Bob inherits a solid strategy and great momentum to continue the airline’s recovery as the Covid pandemic wanes. Bob has the board’s full support.”

Elish Angiolini and Debbie Crosbie to join SSE as non-executive directors

Energy company SSE has appointed Elish Angiolini and Debbie Crosbie to the board as non-executive directors.

The Rt Hon Elish Angiolini QC is principal of St Hugh’s College, Oxford. She served as Lord Advocate of Scotland from 2006 to 2011 and was previously Solicitor General for Scotland. Angiolini is chair of the disciplinary board of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland and a non-executive board member of the Medical and Dental Defence Union of Scotland.

Debbie Crosbie is chief executive officer of TSB and was previously an executive director and chief operating officer at Clydesdale Bank. She is a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers and a member of the Glasgow Economic Leadership Board and the Strathclyde University Business School Advisory Board.

Both Angiolini and Crosbie will join the board and nomination committee in September.

Sir John Manzoni, chair of SSE, said: “Elish has exceptional legal and academic experience and Debbie has a wealth of financial knowledge so both will bring deep insights from their extensive careers. Both will bring a Scottish and wider perspective and will add further depth to the board. I look forward to working with them, the rest of the board and the wider SSE team as we continue to take SSE forward, in doing so, helping the UK and other countries deliver on net zero ambitions”.
